US judge Frank Caprio, known as the “nicest judge in the world”, has died aged 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio was known for the kindness and compassion he showed to the people who graced his courtroom, gaining international recognition with his courtroom reality show Caught in Providence, which ran from 2018 to 2020.
The judge died “peacefully” on August 20 after a “long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer,” a statement posted to his Instagram account read.

“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” the statement read.
“His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
“His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.

“In his honour, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
Several clips of his show circulated on social media following the show’s end, gaining him the title of the “Nicest Judge in the World.”
As a result of his virality, he gained 1.5 million followers on TikTok and 3 million on Instagram.
In a video posted to Caprio’s Instagram just yesterday, he revealed that he had faced a medical setback, and had been readmitted to hospital.

“Last year I asked you to pray for me, and it’s very obvious that you did because I came through a very difficult period.
“Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again, asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.”
In 2023, Caprio shared an emotional Instagram video revealing that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, around the same time as his birthday.
“This birthday is a little different than any other I have ever had,” Caprio said at the time.

“And so I have been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, which is an insidious form of cancer.”
