U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his surprise and disappointment when Shedeur Sanders, the Colorado quarterback, was not selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

On Thursday night, 32 picks were made with two quarterbacks – Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart – being chosen. However, Sanders was not among them, a fact that shocked analysts, fans, his father Deion, and even the President himself.

As the second and third rounds were set to take place on Friday in Green Bay, Trump took to social media to voice his displeasure at Sanders’ unexpected fall. He praised Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father and Colorado head coach, who had predicted his son would be among the top five picks, and hinted that teams will regret overlooking the 23 year old.

“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?” Trump began just before landing in Italy for Saturday’s funeral of Pope Francis. “Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”.

In a surprising turn of events at the 2025 NFL Draft’s first round in Green Bay, the Pittsburgh Steelers passed on Sanders for their No. 21 overall pick. Despite the franchise’s clear need for a quarterback, head coach Mike Tomlin opted to strengthen the defensive line with Derrick Harmon. The New York Giants’ decision to trade up for Dart left no obvious options for Sanders.

However, Sanders remains optimistic about his prospects in the second or third rounds. In a social media video after the first round, he expressed his surprise at going undrafted but maintained his enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

“We all didn’t expect this, of course,” Sanders told his NFL Draft party attendees. “But I feel like with God, anything’s possible – everything’s possible.

“I don’t feel like this happened for no reason. All this is of course fuel to the fire. Under no circumstance – we all know this shouldn’t have happened. But we understand, we’re on to bigger and better things. Tomorrow’s the day. We’re going to be happy regardless.”

During the 2024 college football season at Colorado, Sanders impressed with 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, boasting a nation-leading 74.2 percent completion rate. He bagged the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback, and the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award.

However, during his two-year stint with the Buffaloes, Sanders was sacked 94 times. This not only raises concerns about him taking heavy hits, but it also suggests that the 22 year old may hold onto the ball for too long, which could have contributed to his significant decline.
