Things got chippy between Caitlin Clark and Jacy Sheldon in Tuesday’s clash between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun.

The two were seen having a not-so-friendly conversation in the second quarter after Clark complained about Sheldon’s physical defense on the previous play. The former Dallas Wings star then approached last year’s No. 1 WNBA pick with what appeared to be some savory words, judging by the Fever playmaker’s reaction.

Clark gestured in frustration as she responded before pushing the Sun guard away. Sheldon’s teammate Marina Mabrey gave the Fever star a little shove in response that, in turn, prompted Fever guard Lexie Hull to get involved.

The brief incident then ended, with officials not finding it egregious enough to punish either team. However, the two clashed again in the second half when Sheldon smacked Clark in the head while trying to make a play on the ball.

The Fever playmaker shoved her nemesis in retaliation before Mabrey rammed into Clark, causing her to tumble to the court. Clark and Mabrey both received technical fouls as a result of the altercation. Meanwhile, the officials assessed Sheldon with a Flagrant 1 foul.

Clark and Sheldon’s rivalry dates back to their college days, having multiple battles while playing for Iowa and Ohio State, respectively. Their meeting in 2024 led to a heated moment too, with Sheldon leaving Clark frustrated after reaching over the Hawkeyes guard’s back in an attempt to snatch the ball after a scramble left them entangled on the court.

The pair was part of the same draft class, with the Wings selecting the ex-Buckeyes star at No. 5 overall last year, four picks after the Fever used their top pick to get Clark. After meeting again in the WNBA during a September matchup between Dallas and Indiana, Sheldon emphasized the difficulty of guarding Clark.

“She’s a really good player, everybody sees it,” she said, per ClutchPoints writer Joey Mistretta. “You just look forward to those matchups when you’re a competitor… She can really pass.

“She can pass the crap out of the ball. That’s what makes her so hard to guard.” Another Wings-Fever matchup a couple of weeks later saw Clark and Sheldon having a little back-and-forth again.

“I’ve gone against Jacy for quite a while now in my career,” Clark said after that game. “Every year I was at Iowa. She was really good at Ohio State, so I’m pretty familiar with her game and what she’s about. And I think she’s had a really good year for the Wings. And she just kind of takes what they give you.

“She’s always consistent. She’s always going to step up to the plate and guard whoever she needs to guard. And, you know, happy for her.”

Sheldon landed on the Sun in a blockbuster four-team trade that sent DiJonai Carrington to the Wings. Indiana was part of the deal, acquiring Sophie Cunningham, Jaelyn Brown, and the No. 19 pick in the 2025 draft.
