Dolly Parton is opening up more about what was going on with her notoriously private husband Carl Dean ahead of his death earlier this month, admitting that he “suffered a great deal” before his death as her fellow stars have paid tribute to him.

Dean died on March 3, and not long after his death was made public, Parton had already honored him and their 60 years together with a song, and also addressed their love story in her first public appearance after the fact a few weeks later, as she celebrated the 40th anniversary of her Dollywood theme park.

Now, he was also remembered by others in the music business after they paid tribute to him at the Opry 100: A Live Celebration show.

Now, as she continues to mourn her husband, but also starts trying to live life without him by her side, Parton is also opening up more about the final days and weeks before her husband passed.

In an interview with Knox News, Parton shared her husband ”suffered a great deal” before he died.

“I’m at peace that he’s at peace, but that don’t keep me from missing him and loving him,” she said “It’s a hole in my heart, you know, but we’ll fill that up with good stuff and he’ll still always be with me.”

Her comments come on the heels of the tribute by other stars, which included Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood and Lady A, who all joined forces to perform Parton’s hit, I Will Always Love You, as tribute.

“Everybody here at the Opry and around the world wants to send you our thoughts and prayer,” McEntire said to Parton from the stage. “And you gotta know, we will always love you.”

“I have not stopped crying over the beautiful tribute of ‘I Will Always Love You’ on the 100th Anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry show,” she wrote. “All those beautiful people with all their beautiful voices singing my song as a tribute to my husband Carl..the emotion was beyond words.”

“I have cried enough to wash a great deal of the pain away so thanks to all of you beautiful people that helped make that possible.”

Parton met Dean outside of a laundromat in 1964, on the day she moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music, and the two privately wed in 1966. Despite the level of fame she achieved, Dean retained a private life away from the spotlight.
