On Friday, November 15, 2024, David Wilburn Parton, the older brother of country music icon Dolly Parton, passed away peacefully at his home in White Pine, Tennessee, at the age of 82. His sister, singer Stella Parton, announced the news on social media, expressing the family’s sorrow and honoring his memory.
Born on March 30, 1942, David was the second oldest of twelve siblings in the Parton family. Raised in Sevier County, Tennessee, the Partons grew up in modest circumstances, sharing a small cabin near the Smoky Mountains. Despite their humble beginnings, the family was rich in love, faith, and music—a foundation that would influence many of the siblings’ paths in life.
While some of his siblings pursued careers in entertainment, David chose a different path. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps and later built a successful career as a bridge builder superintendent with Simpson Construction. His work contributed to infrastructure projects across Tennessee, including in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Knoxville. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, David was respected by colleagues and community members alike.
David’s personal life was marked by deep family ties. He was married to his wife, Kay Parton, for 45 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Donna and Dena, and a nephew, Lucas Townsend, whom they considered a son. David was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, cherishing the time spent with his extended family.
In her tribute, Stella Parton wrote, “My brother David passed away peacefully this morning. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a loved one, but he got his angel wings and is now at peace.” She further expressed, “It’s never easy to lose a loved one,” highlighting the deep bond shared among the Parton siblings.
David’s passing follows the deaths of other Parton siblings, including Randy, Floyd, and Larry. Despite these losses, the family remains close-knit, often reflecting on their shared experiences and the values instilled by their parents, Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton.
A funeral service for David was held on Tuesday, November 19, at Leadvale Baptist Church in White Pine, Tennessee. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the church, reflecting David’s commitment to his faith and community.
David Wilburn Parton’s life was characterized by service, dedication, and love for his family. His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the memories cherished by those who knew him.
