They lay in identical cribs like fragile porcelain dolls, eyes open, watching a world they couldn’t touch.

He opened the door just a crack.
Inside, Maria, the maid, sat cross-legged on the floor between the cribs.

Her voice rose and fell like a prayer—gentle, rhythmic, ancient. Her hands moved slowly as she sang, tracing patterns in the air, brushing lightly over the twins’ hands, their feet, their cheeks.
Victor felt a surge of irritation.
He had been very clear.
No unnecessary stimulation.
No unapproved techniques.
No false hope.
He was about to step in—
When he saw Elliot’s fingers move.
Just slightly.
But unmistakably.
Victor’s breath caught.
Maria didn’t notice him.
She was focused—completely—on the children.

Maria lowered her eyes. “I know.”
“Then explain this,” he said, pointing. “Explain that.”
Elliot’s fingers were still curled—no longer limp.
Maria hesitated.
Then she said quietly, “In my village, children like this were not treated as broken.”
Victor scoffed. “This isn’t a village. This is science.”
She met his gaze for the first time.
“Science keeps them alive,” she said gently. “But connection teaches them they exist.”
Victor wanted to argue.
Instead, he sat down heavily in the chair by the wall.
“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” he asked.
Maria took a breath. “I sing to them. I talk to them. I touch them with intention. Slowly. Every day.”
“That’s it?”
She nodded. “Their bodies are quiet. But their minds are not.”
Victor laughed bitterly. “Every specialist in the world says otherwise.”
Maria didn’t argue.
She simply turned back to the twins and resumed her song.

Eliza smiled.

She smiled at Maria.
Victor covered his mouth with his hand.
